Proper Cleaning of a Hedgehog’s Cage: A Step-by-Step Guide

Keeping your hedgehog’s cage clean is essential for their health and well-being. Regular cleaning helps prevent odors, bacteria build-up, and keeps your pet comfortable. Here’s a guide on how to clean your hedgehog's cage properly using a 50/50 vinegar and water solution:

1. Daily Spot Cleaning:

  • Remove any visible waste, uneaten food, and soiled bedding from the cage daily.
  • Replace soiled areas with fresh bedding to maintain a clean environment.

2. Weekly Deep Cleaning:

  • Remove your hedgehog and place them in a safe, temporary enclosure.
  • Take out all accessories, toys, and blankets from the cage.
  • Empty all bedding and dispose of it, if it is like the paper bedding, wash any blankets.

3. Cleaning the Cage:

  • Use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that helps remove stains and odors without harmful chemicals.
  • Spray the entire cage, including corners, walls, and any solid surfaces. Let the solution sit for a few minutes to break down any residues.
  • Wipe down with a clean cloth or paper towel. For stubborn spots, use a soft brush to scrub gently.

4. Cleaning Fleece Liners and Blankets:

  • If you use fleece liners or blankets, wash them every other day to weekly in a washing machine. Add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle to help remove odors and disinfect them naturally.
  • Avoid using fabric softeners or strong detergents as these can irritate your hedgehog’s sensitive skin. Opt for a mild, unscented detergent.

5. Cleaning Accessories and Toys:

  • Use the same vinegar and water solution to clean toys, hideouts, and wheels.
  • Make sure to rinse everything thoroughly with water to remove any vinegar residue and let them air dry before placing them back in the cage.

6. Reassemble the Cage:

  • Once everything is dry, add fresh bedding or clean fleece liners to the cage.
  • Return clean toys, accessories, and your hedgehog to their refreshed home.

7. Frequency:

  • Spot clean daily and deep clean weekly to ensure a healthy, hygienic environment for your hedgehog.

Regular cleaning not only keeps your hedgehog healthy but also minimizes odors and ensures they have a clean and comfortable home. By using a natural solution like vinegar and water, you’re keeping it safe and eco-friendly.
